Alternative Song Discoveries

Dear You,

Shake It Off should definitely be #1 :)

I was going through the iTunes top 200 singles recently to find new music and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of good alternative music (surprise being the amount of alternative, not that it was good, lots of alt music is good). I now have a very full iTunes wish list again thanks to all of these good songs.

Carousel by Melanie Martinez

I love the strong beat in this song with the light, beautifully raspy voice and metaphorical lyrics it's a really nice song to work to, I've discovered.

Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon

This one is far more happy and upbeat and walks the line between alternative and pop but sounds great. It's the perfect dance party song.

Riptide by Vance Joy

I love how diverse Alternative songs can be. This one is very happy in the feel good sense. Almost an Ingrid Michaelson/Avalanche City sound to it, not saying they were copying or are so similar that it's not good to hear them all, there's just this wonderful sound that always makes me smile among these artists.

Stolen Dance by Milky Chance

I think I've heard this one on the radio before but it's really great. If I had to describe it I would say it a soft pop sound with island influences and the slightest hip-hop sound.

Cool Kids by Echosmith

This one has a strong beat but not overwhelmingly like Carousel, a rather simple song but a good one at that. Definitely one of the songs that's going to make me want to dance in the bathroom while getting ready ;)

Anyways, those are some of my recent discoveries, at least the alternative ones. What music have you been listening to recently? Leave me a comment below!

New Discoveries

Dear You,

Recently I've been listening to iTunes Radio quite a bit, it's a lot like Pandora but it lets you do more skips if you're willing to listen to more ads. I felt like I was in a music rut, listening to the same artists over and over and wanted to find new music and my iTunes Wishlist has gotten pretty long, I found some really good new music.

Life of the Party by Shawn Mendes

Shawn started out on Youtube a year ago (at least that's his oldest video on there) and it's so amazing to see how far he's come. This song was #1 on iTunes for several days because it's a very well written, feel good, inspiring song about not caring about what everyone else thinks or says in a sweet way.

Burn With You by Lea Michele

Lea Michele has been a huge inspiration since I started watching Glee in my freshman year and she continues to be so today with her very own album. This song is definitely my favorite.

Everybody by Ingrid Michaelson

I'd already fallen in love with her newest CD, Lights Out, but this song came on the radio and I fell in love with her older CD, Everybody. The title track is definitely my favorite, it's a great feel-good song.

Not Your Birthday by All Star Weekend

I've noticed myself enjoying a lot of boy-band pop-rock songs in this 5SOS radio, not all of them though. This one is one of my favorites, definitely a party-sounding song that I may or may not have random alone dance parties to.

God Only Knows by MKTO

I've loved MKTO since they came out with their first single last winter, they finally came out with the album and it's just as good as I hoped. It took me awhile to decide on my favorite but I think this one is. Their songs are well written and very danceable.

Stuck In Love: A Writer's Playlist

Stuck in Love is without a doubt my favorite movie, it's a love story (or 3) with interesting, relatable interconnected twists and the soundtrack lives up to the movies greatness. It's mostly the songs in the movie that the characters were listening to and I'm completely obsessed with it like I am the movie.

Anyways, those are some of the songs on my wish list. What have you been listening to lately? Tell me in the comments below!

Book Wishlist

Dear You,

Usually I read by renting ebooks from my old library (I mean technically I don't live there anymore but no one has to know that because their ebook library is better than my new city's physical one) which isn't ideal as I absolutely love the feeling of a physical book in my hands but I deal with it. Buying books is usually a bit expensive but lately I've found a few really amazing books that I'd really like to actually own and highlight and mark up because they were so amazing and inspiration that I'd like to add them to my limited personal collection. So here are the books I've been looking at lately...

The Fault in Our Stars
by John Green

I know this is a very popular book and I read it a year ago and loved it. However after watching the movie and falling in love with the story and John Green's inspirational writing all over again I've been wanting to buy my own hard copy. To reread it and highlight the 50 outstanding quotes that lie within it's pages. If you haven't read it, it really is an amazing story, not just about love but about the idea of life and pain and purpose that young and old constantly enjoy.

Leaves of Grass
by Walt Whitman

Whitman is my favorite poet ever and I quite like poetry, it's one of the most beautiful forms of writing and art and his work is about topics that are interesting to me. There are a million poets who write about social issues present in their time: slavery, racism, suffrage, and their work is amazing and so strong. However I'm far more interested in topics like purpose and morals, some deeper thoughts that you definitely find present in Whitman's writing with quotes that I constantly remind myself of throughout life, just trying to 'contribute my verse'.

14,000 Things to be Happy About
by Barbara Ann Kipfer

Everyone has their low moments and I have really been wanting this book for those moments, just something to open up and remind myself to smile. Especially now after reading the Happiness Project and being inspired by the wonderful writing of Gretchen Rubin, I've been thinking about my happiness and ways to be happy so I think this would be a really nice way to stay in a nice mood.

The only similarity between these books is that I found them all really inspiring and applicable to my life so I guess I'm just looking for inspiration lately and I'm genuinely excited to go through them and mark up all of my favorite passages for once, which is really weird because I never mark my books, like not even dog earring them. But I will for these because they're amazing :)

Anyways, hope you enjoyed my short but inspirational-based wish list.
